Creek Valley teacher wins Tribute to Teachers award

Edina, Minn., May 19, 2009 – Creek Valley Special Education teacher Jane Hennessey built and administered, from scratch, a new special education classroom devoted to children with speech delays and autism disorders. Her leadership in this project enabled the children to make tremendous progress, despite their wide range of needs. On Tuesday, May 19, Hennessey was recognized for her outstanding effort by being awarded the RBC Wealth Management’s Tribute to Teachers award. University of Minnesota’s Goldy Gopher visited her classroom to surprise her with the award.

“Unlike a general education teacher, as a special education teacher, Jane provides her students with highly individualized instruction, ever mindful of each student’s idiosyncrasies,” said Molly Wurst, a Creek Valley parent and an RBC Wealth Management employee who nominated Hennessey for the award. “While Jane takes great pleasure in the excitement in the faces of the children in her class, I would like her to know that her outstanding effort is appreciated by the community at large.”

Hennessey is one of four winners of the firm’s Tribute to Teachers contest. RBC Wealth Management collaborated with the University of Minnesota’s men’s hockey program for the contest, asking students and parents to submit nominations.  As a prize, Hennessey will receive $500 to put toward educational materials for the classroom, as well as two tickets to a future Gopher Hockey game. The award will enable the special needs classroom to purchase the speech augmentative devices in the hope of amplifying the children’s success.
