Valley View Middle School Service Squad to host BRIDGING Donation Drive

Edina, Minn., April 10, 2009 – In celebration of service week, the Valley View Middle School Service Squad is bringing in the big trucks – literally! On April 24, the last day of service week, the group has arranged for a donation truck to be parked outside their school for 12 hours to collect good quality furniture and household items for an organization called BRIDGING, which redistributes the donated furniture and household items to families in need.

The BRIDGING truck will be in the Valley View parking lot (6750 Valley View Road) from 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Friday, April 24. The truck will be staffed by parent volunteers throughout the day, and will include student volunteers after school.

“The students wanted to contribute to the community and this seemed like a perfect fit,” said Heather Branigin, Valley View Service Squad Advisor. “Especially in these hard economic times, the students really want to pitch in and help their neighbors. That’s what’s motivating them.”

In 2009, more than 6,000 families will be referred to BRIDGING by social service agencies to receive an entire house of furniture and household items to stabilize and improve their lives. BRIDGING accepts good quality used beds, tables, chairs, upholstered furniture, dressers, and any variety of wood furniture pieces. The organization is always in need of dishes, towels, kitchen utensils, knives, pots and pans, silverware, linens, pillows, lamps and small electrics. To learn more about BRIDGING and to get a complete listing of what donations they accept, visit www.bridging.org.

The BRIDGING event serves as the kick off to Valley View’s all-school party, which runs from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. This year’s party theme is Games for Change and proceeds will serve several deserving organizations including the Human Society, American Red Cross, People Serving People, Kids Against Hunger, Africare and the World Wildlife Fund.
