Edina Public Schools students to hold paper drive

Edina, Minn., May 8, 2009 – More than 1,350 students will gather Friday, May 15 in an amazing race of endurance to try to fill a large collection dumpster with recyclable paper. Joining them is in their recycling efforts is 140 staff members. It’s The Great Paper Pass, also known as The Normandale/Concord Bagathon, spearheaded by both schools’ “Green Teams.”

During the event, students from Concord and Normandale will come out and contribute a paper grocery bag to the collection of recycled paper --- the more they collect, the more their schools get. This kick-off event will start the paper drives being held at Concord Elementary, Normandale Elementary, and South View Middle on May 16 and 17. The paper drive will be located in the Normandale parking lot from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. on both days.

The purpose of the paper drive is to collect paper, such as newspapers, magazines, and cereal boxes, which will be recycled. The schools are partnering with Rock-Tenn (a recycling company) that will pay the schools for the recycled paper based on the weight of the material collected. The funds from the paper drive will be used for green projects at each school.

“The opportunities for recycling paper still exist today and they serve a useful purpose in today’s world,” said John Devine, Normandale Elementary principal. “It’s something we should be mindful of.”

Community members are encouraged to donate. Junk mail, old phone books, printer paper, and old tests and projects from school will all be taken during the paper drive.
