FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Edina Senior Honored for Excellent Writing Talent Edina, Minn., Oct. 09, 2008 – Edina High School senior Abbi Butterfield has been named a recipient of the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) Achievement Award in Writing. Butterfield was selected from a national pool of 1,789 competitors. A total of 525 high school seniors also received the high honors. Participating high schools are only allowed to submit four applications to the NCTE writing competition each year. Students undergo a rigorous screening process in their junior year and must demonstrate exceptional writing abilities to qualify. All contestant hopefuls must submit a portfolio containing poetry, prose, drama and analytical writing samples. The work is then reviewed in a blind reading by select English teachers. The NCTE writing competition is not part of classroom curriculum and no extra credit is given for participation. Students who wish to enter the contest are intrinsically motivated by a sincere passion for writing. As part of the reward, Butterfield will receive a certificate recognizing her accomplishments and her name will be published on the NCTE Web site. Butterfield will also receive a certification card that can be attached to her college applications.
