KIDS Club Tackles Community Hunger

Edina, Minn., July 18, 2008 – During the carefree days of summer, it’s easy to take for granted basic necessities like food. At a time when most kids are committed to the playground, 150 elementary students are pondering the complex issue of hunger in the community. The students, all members of the Countryside, Highlands and Creek Valley
KIDS Club, will run the 14th Annual Volunteers Enlisted to Assist People (VEAP) Summer Food Drive.

The food drive kicks off on July 18th with KIDS Club members placing hundreds of grocery bags donated by Jerry’s Foods on various doorsteps in the community. Community members have seven days to fill their bags with non-perishable food. Contributors are instructed to place the filled bags on their doorsteps Friday, July 25, when KIDS Club members will return to collect the bags between 10:00 a.m. and noon.

According to KIDS Club manager Dede Skold, this year the need is much greater than in past years. “Summer is an especially difficult time for children, as they don’t have access to school breakfasts and lunches,” said Skold. To meet the growing demand, KIDS Club will place an additional donation box by the dumpsters at Countryside Elementary School (5701 Benton Ave., Edina, MN 55436). The general public is encouraged to drop off non-perishable items before July 25.

All food collected is donated to the VEAP Food Shelf, a community service that provides free groceries to Edina, Richfield and Bloomington residents. In the past, the food drive has been incredibly successful. Last year, KIDS Club delivered 2,485 pounds of donated food to VEAP. Community members who want to donate are encouraged to give non-perishable foods; however, the following items are in especially high demand: canned vegetables and fruit, boxed dinners, cereal, tuna, canned pasta, oatmeal, cans of soup, popcorn and rice.
