FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Edina High School Ranked Top 100 in the Nation
Since 1998, Newsweek has compiled an annual list of the top high schools in the nation. Edina High was most recently included in the top 100 in 2007 (#93) and 2003 (#81). According to Newsweek.com, high-performing schools are determined by totaling the number of Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate or Cambridge tests completed and dividing it by the number of graduating seniors. Newsweek’s recognition underscores the high school’s commitment to preparing all learners for higher education. “The amount of time and energy that goes into AP testing is enormous,” said Edina High Principal Bruce Locklear. “Our staff spends a great deal of time preparing students for the exams, and our students put forth tremendous effort to achieve success on AP tests.” Edina Public Schools officials estimate that 865 students took 2,068 AP tests. Furthermore 550 seniors are expected to graduate in June of 2008. According to Newsweek.com, schools that made the list represent the top five percent in the nation. Ric Dressen, superintendent of Edina Public Schools, describes the national recognition as a team success. “The ranking resulted from extra efforts from the students, staff, parents and the community,” he said. Edina Board of Education Chair Randy Meyer agreed with Dressen’s sentiments. “What makes our district successful is a unique combination of talented staff, dedicated parents and a caring community,” said Meyer. Edina’s achievement is felt well beyond the parameters of the high school. “Those of us who work with district employees on a regular basis know the hard work and TLC both teachers and administrators put in every day,” said Arrie Larsen-Manti, Edina Chamber of Commerce president. “The chamber has always believed our future business leaders are Edina graduates, and this news confirms it,” she added.
