FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Black Box Theatre grand opening scheduled for July 30 Edina, Minn., July 23, 2010 – A grand opening of the Edina High School Black Box Theatre will be held on Friday, July 30 at the Edina Performing Arts Center (6754 Valley View Road). The official ribbon cutting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. followed by a brief reception. A performance of Arthur Miller’s “Death of a Salesman,” begins at 7 p.m. in the black box theatre. The grand opening is hosted by Edina High School Thespians and the Edina High School Theatre Boosters. “We are thrilled to have this space completed, said Tom Glass, president of the Edina Theatre Boosters. “The theatre will serve students and the community for years to come.” Money to build the black box theatre originated from the 2003 bond referendum. However, the funds fell short of completing the space. The Edina Thespian Boosters raised an additional $20,000 to add finishing touches like grid lighting, curtains and a sound system. Edina junior James Neville worked on the lighting as part of his James Eagle Scout project. According to Tony Matthes, theatre program director, the appeal of a black box theatre is its versatility. The space is easy to configure to any type of performance space. It can be used as a dance studio, theatre classroom or a performance space. Audiences who catch a black box show will enjoy a more intimate experience than a traditional theatre. “The audience is right there,” said Matthes. “It is pretty powerful.” About Edina Public Schools: ### |
